FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Graciela Sacco
Outside

Massachusetts College of Art presents an exhibition of works by Argentine artist Graciela Sacco in the Bakalar Gallery, 623 Huntington Avenue, from September 8th through October 21st. A photographer, video and installation artist, Ms. Sacco also creates heliographs, images produced by a chemical action of light on emulsified photosensitive surfaces. Ms. Sacco will lead a walk-through of the exhibition at 4:00 pm on September 7th, and a reception will follow at 5:00 pm. This exhibition will be the first presentation of her work in New England and the largest retrospective of her work anywhere.

Sacco's work has been exhibited internationally; she represented Argentina in the So Paolo and Havana biennial art festivals. Her strong sociopolitical photographic images serve as metaphors for some of the most acute problems of contemporary society, such as famine, homelessness, authoritarianism, corrupt governments and officials, gun violence, and crime.

Sacco never allows the viewer to see an entire image, but only fragments of her photographs. The works are initially alluring and even seductive. It is not until one is fully "inside" the image that a more disturbing undercurrent is revealed. For example, an engaging image of a hand holding a cloth is really an unsettling image of a homeless child clutching a blanket. This revelation is supported by the exhibition's progression from light to dark. Bocanada (Mouthful) features printed sculptural pieces such as spoons, a wooden table, stamps, forks or paper, displayed in light. As the viewer proceeds through the exhibition, the room (and the subject matter) darkens. Esperando a los barbaros (Waiting for the barbarians) comprised of images on Plexiglas, has its own dim illumination. In the darkest part of the gallery, Un lugar bajo el sol (A place in the sun), artist's books are presented and illuminated with provided flashlights.

Heliography, used commercially in the development of architectural blueprints, has been adapted by Ms. Sacco as she manipulates the technique in an unorthodox manner. This allows the image to be transferred onto a wide range of materials, from paper and canvas to rubber, leather, wood, glass, stone, cardboard, plastic and metal.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10-6, and Saturday 11-5. Please call (617) 879-7333 for updated information.
